About Laurel
Who is behind The Seagull Nest?
I am Laurel Segal, owner of The Seagull Nest. Since I was a child, I have always been interested in babies. As I continued to grow, I began babysitting when I was 10 years old! Throughout my life, I continued to explore my interest in newborns and young children and eventually became who I am today. I know how daunting the postpartum period is and my priority is to support new parents with our postpartum services to my total capacity. I love to learn and strive for the utmost level of expertise in my fields. I had been thinking about starting a business for a long time, took a leap of faith in June 2021, and hadn’t looked back. I am a trained Lactation Educator, Postpartum Doula, Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant and Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. I also have an extensive background with infertility and would love to use that knowledge in a professional manner. I have been adding qualifications to my resume for years and finally decided it was time to move forward.
I am passionate about helping people and what better time than when people are making a huge transformation in their lives? Working directly with people in the postpartum period gives me the opportunity to teach, embrace, empower and support parents where they are. Working with families after the postpartum period whether it is to assist with questions around feeding solid foods, concerns about whether or not your infant is meeting developmental milestones or the best time to teach your baby American Sign Language is my pleasure. While I am not a medical professional, I do have an extensive amount of knowledge around children from birth through age three. I am familiar with appropriate developmental milestones, Baby Led Weaning, using sign language with babies, what appropriate sleep is supposed to look like and how to modify it as well as so much more!
I am proficient in American Sign Language and knowledgeable about the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture. I have an Associate of Art Degree in Deaf Studies and am happy to work with the Deaf Community! I have been using ASL since 2006 and know that there are not enough providers that are conversational in ASL or have an understanding of Deaf Culture.
I am happy to work with families of any dynamic and welcome you with open arms, including but not limited to: BIPOC families, LGBTQ families, single-parent or multiple parent families, families with grandparents caring for their grandchildren, families with adoptive or foster children, families with child who have disabilities and any other type of family that you can imagine!
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, teenage twin step-daughters and my son. I love photography, gardening and anything related to plants. We reside outside of Boston, Massachusetts.
